Subtle differences

Aside from the big, obvious differences between US and Norwegian culture (e.g. national population of over 300 million vs. national population of 4 million, American Idol vs. Eurovision, football vs. football, private vs. public healthcare) there are some subtle differences in everyday life here which I am gradually beginning to recognize and appreciate.

For instance, when Norwegians applaud a speech or performance, they typically clap in unison; everyone in the audience in sync, with a half a second pause between each clap. You might not expect it, but the effect is actually unsettling, sounding quite different from the random applause which I'm used to. It almost seems to convey a different sentiment. I wonder what a Norwegian might think of a typical American audience, rowdy and shambolic
